Commissioning Editor, Quercus

Great opportunity to help build and drive a brand-new, ideas-driven international non-fiction imprint

WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO

Named Small Publisher of the Year and Publisher of the year in its first decade in business, Quercus has quickly built a reputation as one of the UK’s most vibrant, creative publishing houses. Home to bestsellers from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo to The Flatshare, from the ‘Famous Five for Grown-Ups’ series to Stories for Boys Who Dare to be Different, the launch of our new, yet-to-be named non-fiction imprint builds on our long track record of finding and publishing the best books from around the world, wherever they are.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING

You’ll be coming up with and developing book ideas that will fly in both English language and foreign markets: as well as supporting the publisher in commissioning authors, illustrators and designers for existing proposals. Subject areas might include lifestyle, wellness, nature and science, in both b/w and full colour. You will keep close tabs on industry, social media and market trends in order to spot smart publishing opportunities. You will be responsible for your own book schedules including briefing and overseeing out-of-house editors, designers and illustrators. You will be an enthusiastic champion of your books from conception through to publication and beyond – collaborating closely with marketing, publicity, sales and rights. This is an exciting, varied and highly creative role for someone with a passion for design and package as well as strong editorial skills.

WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR

Reporting to the Publisher, the successful applicant will have a strong commercial sense, be bursting with non-fiction ideas and adept at finding authors, illustrators, designers, archives and brands that will make each book truly stand out in the market. We are looking for books that may well hit a trend in the UK but will have a long life, selling in multiple languages around the world. The right candidate will have international awareness, as well as be a keen observer of trends within publishing and beyond. Experience of commissioning co-editionable illustrated books is preferred.

WHAT WE OFFER

This is a chance to be part of a start-up imprint where you can make your mark and gain a wider business understanding in the process. We offer a fun, dynamic and creative environment with plenty of support in skills and training, as well as a competitive salary and benefits package.

OUR COMMITMENT

We aim to attract and develop talent from a base as broad as the world of readers we want to reach, with a wide and representative range of age, faith, disability, race, gender, sexuality and socio-economic, regional and cultural backgrounds.
